Introduction:
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a critical solution that allows both data transmission and power delivery over a single Ethernet cable. This technology is implemented through RJ45 connectors in Ethernet networks and is widely applied to Internet phones, wireless access points, IP cameras, computer devices, and other equipment that can be powered by Ethernet. PoE equipment starts without an additional power plug/socket, reducing the time and cost associated with power cord configuration, and therefore lowering the overall expense of the system.
What is PoE technology?
The complete PoE system consists of two parts:
Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Device (PD).
1. Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE):The power sourcing equipment (PSE) includes Ethernet network switches, routers, and hubs that support PoE function.
2. Powered Device (PD): The powered devices (PD) mainly include PoE IP cameras, as well as applications such as PoE speakers and PoE LED.
The following table illustrates the three main PoE standards (802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt), their corresponding power outputs, output voltage ranges, and supported device types.

802.3af Standard:
The 802.3af standard (PoE) defines the basic form of Ethernet-based power delivery, suitable for devices with lower power demands. Power Sourcing Equipment under this standard provides a maximum output power of 15.4W with an output voltage range between 44V and 57V. Powered Devices (PDs) receive input power ranging from 3.84W to 13W. Typical devices using this standard include VoIP phones and wireless access points, such as the traditional VoIP phone.
802.3at Standard:
The 802.3at standard (also known as PoE+) offers higher power output, making it ideal for devices with greater power requirements. PSEs can supply up to 30W, with an output voltage between 50V and 57V. PDs can draw up to 25.5W. This standard supports devices like Video IP Phones, which require more power for video conferencing functionality.
802.3bt Standard:
With the increasing power demands of devices, the 802.3bt standard (PoE++) provides even greater power output. The standard is divided into Class 5 through Class 8, with a maximum PSE output power of 90W. This high-power capability supports devices like laptops and high-end video equipment. The PD Input voltage ranges from 41V to 57V, with PDs receiving between 40W and 71.3W, such as the laptop shown in the table.
PoE technology enables devices to be located up to 100 meters away from the power source. However, with longer transmission distances, voltage drop and power loss become more significant. To address this challenge, PoE devices typically use higher supply voltages, particularly in the 48V to 56V range, to reduce transmission losses.
